Prior to World War 1, Jacob Getzler ran a general store in a rural area of Galicia, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  The area had a reputation for skilled horseman; thus, despite not knowing how to ride a horse, he was drafted into the Austrian cavalry.  After WW1, he brought his family to Antwerp, Belgium.
