Despite being an excellent student, Estelle Gold dropped out of high school to help earn money for the family (who lived in the Lower East Side of Manhattan). She was hired as a secretary by two young men who were starting a construction materials company. Estelle said she was hired because she had "nice gams." Regardless of why she was hired, her new bosses quickly recognized her intelligence and gave her responsibilities well beyond that of the typical secretary in the early 20th century. The business was very successful and Estelle became one of the very few female top executives of a Fortune 500 firm. |
